Baking Soda and Vinegar Experiment

I did this with my 4’s and 5’s at Co-op Tuesday and wanted to try it with Little Man. Here is what we used:

4 4oz baby food jars
1 spaghetti jar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda per baby food jar
4-5 drops of food coloring per baby food jar
1 oz of vinegar per baby food jar
1/2 c baking soda in spaghetti jar
1c vinegar in spaghetti jar

First I gave Little Man all the baby food jars, a jar with vinegar in it, and a dropper so he could see the chemical reaction in the small scale.

Then we did a big scale πŸ™‚

I LOVED watching Little Man do this experiment, he kept trying different ways to get the same reaction from the ingredients. Then he mixed all the colors together in the big bottle and then poured it back into the baby food jars and kept doing that for about 30 mins. You could just see him absorbing all the information.

    1. We would do this at least once a week when my son was younger. The first time I introduced the colors I didn’t let him see them so when he put the vinegar on the baking soda he got a surprise πŸ™‚

  1. This is such a cute activity sadly I did not do this with my boys, but they absolutely love play like this so I might let them do it now! They are 8 and 5. It would also be great to introduce color mixing too!!
